The "Handbook of the Jewish Question "(Handbuch der Judenfrage) from 1923 is an anti-Semitic propaganda work by the German publicist Theodor Fritsch. The book was first published in 1887 under the title Antisemitic Catechism and from 1907 onwards, disseminated under the new title in numerous, continually expanded editions. It was one of the most influential texts of modern antisemitism in Germany and served as a "handbook" for the völkisch movement and later for the National Socialists.
Key content and meaning:
Systematization of anti-Jewish stereotypes: In the book, Fritsch compiled a multitude of resentments and conspiracy theories against Jews. He attempted to establish anti-Semitism as a comprehensive worldview.
Ethnic ideology: The book propagated a racist ideology that assumed an alleged biological inferiority of the Jews and blamed them for all social problems.
Influence: The work significantly contributed to the spread and entrenchment of antisemitic ideas in pre- and post-Nazi Germany. It provided the ideological basis for the later persecution and extermination of the Jews.
The 1923 edition, as well as the following ones, was published by Fritsch's own publishing house, Hammer-Verlag, and had a wide readership.
